I need to do a few things with specialized tools like a drill press, laser cutter and reflow oven -- no point in owning these things myself.

I've looked at DMM.make AKIBA, which would be ideal, but they have closed down public access. The next best thing I can find is the FabCafe, but it's in Shibuya, which is a fairly long trek from my home.

Is there something similar in the east of Tokyo, or in Chiba, ideally reachable from the Sobu line?

check out make: aoi in koto-ku, it's near monzen-nakacho station on the tozai line so not exactly sobU line but one transfer from otemachi. they've got a laser cutter and drill press, not sure about reflow oven but worth calling ahead. also try fab lab kamakura if ur ever down that way, but for east tokyo make: aoi is probably ur best bet that's actually open to the public. the sobU line thing is tricky though, most maker spaces cluster around the west side or akihabara. there's also a smaller place called dmm.make kichijoji but that's even further west. honestly if u can handle the trip to shibuya, fabcafe is still the most reliable for all three tools in one spot, but make: aoi is way closer to the east side.

Have you tried the Kashiwa-no-ha area? There's a space called Kashiwa-no-ha Open Innovation Lab, it's a bit more corporate but they do open certain workshop hours to the public. It's on the Tsukuba Express so not the Sobu line, but you can get there from Akihabara in about 25 minutes, which might beat dragging yourself all the way to Shibuya. For the reflow oven specifically, I'd call ahead because their equipment roster shifts with whatever program is running that month. Another low-key option is the community workshop at Tokyo Metropolitan University in Hachioji, but that's west and honestly not worth the trip unless you're already out there. If you're set on the east side, make: aoi is the only one I'd trust for the laser cutter, but their drill press is a bit finicky, you might want to bring your own bits.

yeah the make: aoi shout is solid tbh. another option is fab lab shibaura, it's near tamachi so not exactly east but the yamanote loop gets u there quick from tokyo station. they've got a reflow oven too i think. otherwise maybe

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
