I actually dont know much about this particular sub but when I searched google this sub had a bunch of upvoted posts related to this so Im posting this here.

I posted a topic on Japanlife asking about info related to various phone companies and their alternatives, I dunno maybe it could have been low effort/Googleable, but regardless, I imediately got a message that I was permanently banned. This is with no prior warning or arguments or any negative interactions in the 7+ years I've been posting on there, just completely out of the blue.

So I reply to the ban message asking what rule I violated, that I just reviewed the rules and didn't think I violated any of them. I later then posted an additional comment mentioning that oh maybe it was the one related to low effort and that I apologize if thats the case but mentioned that I thought their process was pretty heavy handed for something so simple.

They didn't reply even a single time and instead "muted" me which says that I can't even talk to the mods there anymore. I've heard that there have been alot of weird stuff with the mods there but I thought usually its related to getting into an argument with them or them not liking you or something, but I'm not even in that situation. I was litterally just permabanned for posting a single question topic, without the ability to ask the mods the reason or appeal it.

Is this real life or what, are the mods actually this bizarre? Or could it be one of the mods became disgruntled and is doing some weird stuff or something? Its hard to believe that the sub has been running for so long like that.

Yeah that sounds about right for Japanlife. The mods there have a reputation for being super heavy-handed and banning people with no explanation, even long-time users. I'd just move on and use r/Tokyo or one of the more specific subs instead.

That's pretty standard for Japanlife unfortunately. The mod team there has been like this for years, I've seen people get banned for asking about specific train routes or recommending a restaurant that one of them didn't like. They've got some automated filters set up too, so even innocent posts can trigger a permaban if certain keywords pop up. Try r/Tokyo or the city-specific subs instead, or the JapanTravel sub if you're dealing with visitor stuff.

honestly yeah the mods on japanlife are known for being weirdly aggressive out of nowhere. i'd suggest just using r/tokyo or r/movingtojapan if you need practical info, way less drama there.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
