Artist opportunities in Tokyo?

Hello all! I hope this is okay to post here.

My name is Gus Møystad, I'm a Dutch/Norwegian artist and comic book artist, and I just visited Japan for the first time this year. I have always loved Japanese art ever since I could flip through my grandfather's giant book of ukiyo-e images but now having visited museums, print shops, galleries and art supplies shops in Kyoto and Osaka, I would like to make real work of immersing myself in the art tradition.

I was wondering if there are any artists or locals here that know of any artist residencies, summer schools, or workshops (whatever length, though preferably longer than 2 weeks) in Tokyo or, failing that, Japan generally. I'll leave a link to my Instagram for some sense of my work if it helps. This is the very start of my research so any and all tips or hints are appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

hey gus, welcome to the rabbit hole lol. if u want something longer than 2 weeks, check out the tokyo wonder site residencies, they take international artists but the application is competitive af. also, the musashino art university has open workshops in summer, not exactly a residency but u can jump into specific printmaking or washi classes without being enrolled full time.

for a more diy route, look up "geidai" (tokyo university of the arts) international exchange programs, they sometimes host short term research stays. and honestly, hitting up local ateliers in areas like yanaka or kiyosumi-shirakawa and just asking if they need a studio assistant for a month might work better than formal residencies, japanese folks appreciate the direct approach if u bring some of ur prints as a portfolio. the paper shops in kanda are also a goldmine for sourcing materials cheap, way better than tourist spots in kyoto.

tbh i'd skip the formal residencies and just find a cheap sharehouse near a print studio. tokyo has a ton of community workshops in shitamachi area, they let u use presses by the hour if u can convince them ur serious. kimono repair shops sometimes take apprentices too

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
