Hello

I apologise if this is the wrong subreddit for this type of question. I understand there are many retro stores in Akihabara and the likes, but let's say you wanted to purchase the upcoming Zelda game.

Where do you recommend to go to, then?

Thank you

ngl the big stores are fine but they can be a clusterfuck on release day. i usually just hit up tsutaya or GEO, theyre rental chains but they sell new copies too and theres way less people. the one near me in setagaya always has stock day one and sometimes they have a little point card bonus. also check amazon jp if you dont mind waiting a day for delivery, their release day shipping is solid and you avoid the shinjuku madness entirely

tbh for new releases i just use the nintendo store online or go to yodobashi camera in shinjuku. the nintendo store in shibuya is cool but they do lottery for big titles so u might not get in. yodobashi has a whole floor of games and the staff usually have the new stuff stacked near the escalator so u can grab and go. plus u can use the point card if u got one

honestly for a new release like zelda, just hit up any big electronics store. yodobashi camera in akihabara or bic camera near shinjuku station always have a massive wall of new games day one. you can usually grab it tax-free with your passport too, which saves a bit compared to the smaller shops. akihabara's good for browsing but for a guaranteed copy without line drama, those chains are the move

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

agreed on kiyosumi being calmer, but the tawaman effect in kuramae is mostly along the edo-dori side. walk 5 min toward kotobashi & rents drop again. still cheaper than miyamasuzaka either way

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
