Which bar(s) do non-mainstream ravers visit?

Hey hey,

I want to enjoy some authentic underground techno raves and thought the best place to get to know the rave culture in Tokyo is to go where the non-mainstream people are before the raves :). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Grateful for any suggestions from you, my techno/electro friend :)!

the other person is right about koenji but imo u gotta check out the bars around takadanobaba too, specifically a tiny spot called basement bar. it's not even on google maps half the time, just a staircase next to a ramen shop. pregame there and u'll prob run into residents from places like vent or contact who are off-duty. also worth peeping the flyer wall at disk union in shimokitazawa, they always have weird one-off events that never hit social media

honestly skip the clubs in shibuya and head straight for koenji or shimokitazawa. places like 7th floor or aria have that raw warehouse vibe without the tourist crowd. koenji's backstreets also have tiny bars where djs hang before gigs, just follow the bass leaking out of a basement door. a lot of the best parties are on the grassroots tokyo techno facebook group, that's where the real heads post flyers for one-night events in nakano or kichijoji

ngl the best prefunk spots are the tiny listening bars in ochiai, like bar bossa or the bar above record shop jet set. they're not trying to be "underground" they just are. bartenders there can point u to house parties that don't even have a name, just a time and a LINE group. also if ur into electro over straight techno, check out the monthly "acid pancake" night at forestlimit in shinjuku. it's a tiny cramped room but the sound system punches way above its weight and the crowd is all producers and collectors, not instagram ravers

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
