Y'all have lots of old dudes on bikes drinking alcohol while riding?

I swear if I'm out and about I see them almost every time without fail. What's bizarre is that police go so hard against folks driving cars while impaired but largely ignore the old men on bikes. The legal loophole is that bicycles are classified as "light vehicles" under Japanese traffic law, but the drunk driving penalties only explicitly target cars and motorcycles. So technically you can get a ticket for cycling drunk, but it's rarely enforced unless you cause an accident. I've seen cops in Ueno just watch a guy weaving through the park with a can of Strong Zero in his hand and do nothing about it. It's one of those unspoken allowances for the elderly, like how nobody says anything when they cut in line at the post office.

it's a whole thing, legally speaking bikes are technically supposed to follow the same road rules as cars but no one enforces it. you see them outside combini in shitamachi neighborhoods like senju or kawaguchi just sitting on their mamacharis sipping a chu-hi at 10am. i think the cops just don't want to deal with the paperwork for something that usually ends with the guy wobbling home slower than walking speed

yeah it's kinda wild honestly. police just don't care about bikes, even if they're swerving all over the place. i think it's just one of those things where everyone looks the other way since it's usually just old guys going slow

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
