I often check Timeout Tokyo, Tokyo Cheapo, or Flip Japan, but I still miss many events. I work in Roppongi, and today I saw some workers installing dance installations in Roppongi Hills, but I can't find any information about that! The same thing is happening near my place, where my local temple will have some celebrations.

Is there a reliable page, even in Japanese, that lists them?

For Roppongi specifically, the dance installation you saw is probably for the Roppongi Art Night or the summer yosakoi event they do in the plaza. The Japanese sites like Walkerplus or O-matsuri.com are your best bet for a proper calendar. Walkerplus lets you filter by ward and month, so you can see everything in Minato-ku or wherever you live. The temple stuff near your place you'd need to check the local ward's official site or the town association's page, they usually have a PDF flyer up a month before.

fwiw the Japanese sites are def the way to go but even then they can be hit or miss for really local stuff. I usually just bookmark my ward's official event calendar - Setagaya-ku has a solid one that lists every tiny festival and bon odori in the area, most wards do something similar. the Roppongi thing could be the Azabu Juban matsuri actually, that one's mid-August and they set up stages and stuff in the plaza beforehand. for fireworks the 2024 calendar on hanabi.walkerplus.com is pretty complete even if it's just in Japanese, just search by month and it shows all the major ones with estimated crowd sizes

Honestly, for hyper-local stuff like your temple or Roppongi Hills, just try searching the area name plus "matsuri" in Japanese on Twitter or Instagram. People post about it way before the English sites pick it up.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
