I think something about becoming a dad has made me feel tremendously sad at the deaths of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi last year, more so than when the news of their passings was first announced.

Anyway, I'm going to be in Tokyo on business in October/November. I wondered if there's any tributes or YMO-related sights you recommend visiting for fans of their music? Either in Tokyo or further afield. For instance, in London there's several David Bowie related places you might want to visit. Thanks!

the tower records cafe in shibuya did a ymo themed menu a while back, not sure if it's still running but worth checking. if you're into their visual art side, the hara museum of contemporary art has hosted stuff connected to the band's circle before. also just walking around daikanyama where sakamoto lived gives you a vibe of the neighborhood he was in, nothing touristy but it's a nice area

honestly the best YMO-adjacent thing right now is the Ryuichi Sakamoto tribute installation at the NTT InterCommunication Center in Shinjuku, it runs through early november. they've got his mixed reality piece from the last exhibition plus some archival stuff from the YMO days. not a huge exhibit but it's quiet and you can actually sit and listen

if you're out in nakameguro the old Alfa Studio building where they recorded a bunch of stuff is still there, it's now a fancy restaurant but the exterior is basically unchanged. it's on the meguro river near the yutenji temple area, about 10 min walk from nakameguro station. not a destination but a nice detour if you're walking along the river

also the HMV record shop in shibuya has a surprisingly good japanese electronic section, they keep the YMO stuff mixed in with other 70s/80s japanese synth stuff. found a first pressing of Solid State Survivor there last year for like 2000 yen which is a steal

If you make it out to Harajuku, the old Yellow Magic Orchestra studio was in the backstreets near Omotesando, not much to see now but it's a nice walk. There's also a record shop called Disk Union in Shinjuku that usually has a solid YMO section with rare pressings.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
