Cafes/ coffee shops/ book shops where I can sit and work?

There's a spot called Cafe Bricks in Kichijoji that flies under the radar. It's a two-floor space with proper tables and outlets on the second level, plus a decent food menu if you end up staying through lunch. Wifi is reliable and the crowd is mostly students and freelancers, so nobody's giving you side-eye for camping out.

For a bookshop angle, try the Book House Cafe in Jimbocho, right in the used book district. It's got a small reading room with armchairs and they serve coffee, but the real draw is you can browse the stacks between work sessions. Jimbocho's quieter than Shibuya or Daikanyama, so it feels less like a tourist trap and more like a local's hideout. Just note they close around 7pm, so it's an afternoon spot, not an evening one.

fuglen's good but honestly the best kept secret is the cafe inside the tokyo metropolitan art museum in ueno. it's got that big glass wall facing the park, wifi's free, and nobody's rushing u. weekdays it's dead quiet, plus u can grab a book from the museum shop downstairs and just zone out.

for books, i'd skip tsutaya and hit up shibuya publishing & booksellers. it's a tiny curated spot near shibuya crossing, they have a little counter with like 6 seats and they serve decent drip coffee. it's not a laptop haven, more of a notebook-and-pen vibe, but if u want to actually read something while u work it's perfect. open till 8pm most days.

if u want quiet + wifi, hit up the fuglen tokyo in yoyogi, it's a norwegian spot that roasts their own beans. the seating is a bit tight but the vibe is solid, and they're open late. for books + coffee, tsutaya books in daikanyama is the classic but it gets packed, so i'd go to the one in roppongi hills instead, way more space and the view is decent. otherwise, chain-wise, veloce cafes are everywhere and nobody will bother u for hours, just buy one drink and camp out.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
