I'm moving in close to a week and would like to give my carpet a proper cleaning before I move. Would like to find somewhere in central/south Tokyo, ideally.

Also, if anyone happens to own one and feels like lending it out for a few hours, shoot me a PM and maybe we can work something out.

honestly, the home center route is solid but if you wanna skip the rental hassle, check if your nearest Tokyu Hands or Loft has the karcher machines on the shelf. some of the bigger ones in shibuya and shinjuku sell them outright, and you could just buy one, use it, and return it within their 7-day return window. not the most ethical move but people do it all the time, especially for a one-off clean.

fwiw, the karcher Puzzi models are the ones that actually deep-clean, not the little handheld steamers. if you're in the south, the Tokyu Hands in Futako-Tamagawa has a decent selection and the staff there actually know which attachments work on tatami-adjacent carpets.

also, if you're on a budget, some of the larger Don Quijote stores in Ota ward have a weird hidden rental section near the luggage storage. it's not advertised, you gotta ask at the counter. last time I checked it was like 2000 yen for half a day, but they only had one unit so call first. moving's stressful enough without hunting for machines, so maybe just bite the bullet and buy one if you can't find a rental, cuz the resale value on Mercari is actually decent after you're done.

try the home center chains, like keiyo d2 or cainz, they do rentals at most bigger stores. the one in shinagawa has machines for like 3000 yen a day, plus you gotta buy the cleaning solution there. if u're in setagaya, the cainz at futako-tamagawa is solid too, they stock the karcher units that actually work on tatami-adjacent carpets.

also, don't sleep on the local "kurashi no dougu" rental shops, they're scattered around meguro and ota ward, usually cheaper than the big guys. just call ahead, cuz most of them only have one or two machines and they book up fast on weekends.

if u're desperate, some airbnb cleaning services rent em out by the hour, but that's more of a last resort since they charge a premium. good luck with the move, carpet cleaning's a pain but worth it before the new place's floors get wrecked.

dunno if this helps but check the neighborhood app for your ward, like the setagaya one, people post rentals there all the time. saw a guy lending his out for a six pack once lol

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
