Hello, I sprained my ankle and am leaving the country in 1.5 days. I've rented crutches from the hospital and paid a deposit, but I need to return them tomorrow.

The problem is that I cannot find a place to buy crutches or an air walker, and many people online seem to have the same problem. I have been searching for the last 2 days. My Japanese relatives also could not find a place. Can anybody please tell me where I can find them in Tokyo?

At this point it really feels like I might have to steal the crutches, but I DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS.

Try Amazon Japan with same-day delivery, it's honestly your best bet at this point. Search for "松葉杖" (matsubazue) or "エアウォーカー" and filter for Prime, a lot of medical supply sellers ship within a few hours in Tokyo. Set the delivery address to your hotel or a nearby convenience store pickup point, that usually works even if you're leaving soon.

If that fails, check a large drugstore like Matsumoto Kiyoshi or Tomod's, the bigger ones in Shinjuku or Shibuya sometimes stock basic crutches in the back near the mobility aids, though it's hit or miss. There's also a medical equipment rental shop near Tokyo Station called Tokyo Hoken Fukushi Center, but they're more rental focused. Honestly, if you're truly stuck, the deposit you paid might be less than the hassle, just return them and buy a cheap cane at a 100 yen shop for the flight. A sprained ankle on a plane is rough, but you'll survive.

Have you tried a surgical or orthopedic supply shop directly? They're not always obvious from the street, but there's a cluster around Ochanomizu near the big hospitals, like the ones on Yushima Street. Places like Igaku Shoin or Maruishi Medical sell crutches outright, usually around 3,000 to 5,000 yen, and they're used to walk-ins who need gear fast.

If that's too far, look for a "hokensho" or medical equipment store in your ward, many are listed under 福祉用具 in the local directory. Your relatives might not have searched that term, it's a specific category. Also, some train stations rent out crutches for free if you ask the staff, but that won't solve your leaving problem.

One more thing, the deposit you paid probably covers the rental period, so returning them late might just eat the deposit, not an issue. For the flight, a compression bandage from a pharmacy and a firm shoe on the other foot might be enough, air casts are heavy for carry-on anyway.

check the bigger sports stores like victoria or alpen in shinjuku, they sometimes have air casts near the injury stuff. or honestly just ask at any 24h don quijote, the ones in ikebukuro are huge and have a random medical corner sometimes

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
