Any law experts ?

the 23 day detention thing is real but people exaggerate it a bit. most tourist arrests get processed faster because they don't want to deal with the consulate hassle. the bigger issue is that they don't have to let you call a lawyer right away, they can wait until after they book you. if you get picked up, keep saying "i want to contact the embassy" in english, not japanese, because they have to respond to that request under the vienna convention. also, don't sign anything you can't read, even if they seem friendly about it.

honestly the whole "stay quiet" thing works in theory but japanese police have this trick where they'll just keep asking the same question in different ways for hours until you slip up. they don't need a confession to hold you, they just need "reasonable suspicion" which is pretty broad here. biggest thing people mess up is trying to explain themselves in broken japanese, that's how they get you.

if you're a foreigner the consulate thing is your best bet, but don't expect them to magically get you out. they can visit you and make sure you're not being tortured or whatever but they won't pay for a lawyer or stop the interrogation. the tokyo bar association has a list of english speaking lawyers who do criminal defense, costs like 50,000 yen for an initial consultation. way better than using the free duty lawyer they assign you, those guys are basically part of the system.

one thing nobody mentions is that if you're arrested for something minor like a bar fight or public intoxication, they might just let you go with a warning if you're polite and don't make it worse. but if you're actually being held for something serious, clam up and wait for a real lawyer, not the one they offer you at the station.

yeah staying quiet and asking for a lawyer is the right move here. the problem is you can be held for up to 23 days before they have to charge you or let you go, and during that time they can interrogate you for hours a day without a lawyer present. you don't legally have to answer but they'll pressure you hard, especially if you don't speak japanese. if you can, get a bengoshi (lawyer) on speed dial before you even come, there's a few english-speaking firms like the tokyo bar association's free consultation service. also, if you're a foreigner, the consulate can help but they won't stop the process

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
