Hi,

I'll be in Japan for a few days and doing some souvenir shopping for my family. My niece's birthday was recently and she got her ears pierced for the occasion and I'd like to get her some cool earrings from Tokyo.

Any stores people recommend? I'll be in Ginza but happy to travel anywhere the metro goes. Thai you!

If you're in Ginza already, pop into the Loft in the Yurakucho side of the district. They have a small but solid selection of Japanese-made earrings near the accessories section, often with cute motifs like Mt. Fuji or little daruma dolls. For something more traditional, walk over to the Nakamise shopping street at Asakusa and check the side stalls for tiny silver or gold studs with kanji charms. Most of those places will have earring hooks too, so it works for pierced ears.

The accessory floors at department stores like Mitsukoshi in Ginza or Isetan in Shinjuku have a section called "bijou" or "zakka" that carries proper kids' earrings from Japanese brands. They're usually in the same area as the hair clips and headbands, often displayed in little glass cases. For something more playful, the character goods store Kiddy Land in Harajuku has earrings featuring Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty or Cinnamoroll, and they're made for pierced ears, not just clip-ons. Just check the backing type because some of the character ones are actually stick-on rather than post.

honestly for a kid, the 100 yen stores are underrated. daiso in ginza has a whole wall of earrings and they're cute and cheap, like under 500 yen for a pair. they do animal shapes and fruit stuff that a niece would probably love. just check the backs are for pierced ears not clip-ons, they mix them up sometimes. if u want something a bit nicer, the tokyu hands near ginza station has a jewelry counter with tiny hammered silver studs that are japanese craft but still playful

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
