Lately a lot of foreigners being stopped by police, what laws should foreigners be aware of when this happen?

Embarrassed, they leave and let her go. In this case, was it legal?

yeah that video's been going around. the cop basically tried the "we see something" bluff and she called it. technically they need a specific reason, like matching a description or you acting sketchy, not just being foreign. carrying your zairyu card is the big one, they can stop you for that legally and it's dumb to fight it. also if they do ask to search, you can say no, but stay polite and ask if you're being detained, that usually ends it. keeping your hands visible and not reaching for anything helps too, they get jumpy about that.

honestly the underwear thing was a power move but its not really about the bag search, the real law to know is that they can ask for your ID anytime and you have to show it, no probable cause needed. refusing that is where people actually get in trouble, not the bag. also if they start with the "voluntary interview" thing you can just walk away, but once they say you're under arrest that's it, don't resist, just ask for a lawyer and stay quiet. knowing the difference between those two moments saves you a lot of headache.

Just carry your residence card and don't sign anything you can't read. Half the time they're just checking paperwork anyway.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

agreed on kiyosumi being calmer, but the tawaman effect in kuramae is mostly along the edo-dori side. walk 5 min toward kotobashi & rents drop again. still cheaper than miyamasuzaka either way

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
