The mods on this sub have been pretty lenient with people promoting their events on this sub, even if they break the 10% self promotion guideline.

I believe those events can be relevant to the community. I also believe you guys are big enough to upvote / downvote to pick what you want to see, without having moderators choose for you.

How are we feeling about this? Everybody cool?

yeah i'm fine with it tbh. the 10% thing never made sense for a place like tokyo where stuff moves fast and events come and go. i found my favorite monthly flea market in shimokitazawa because someone posted it here, turned out they were the organizer but i wouldn't have known otherwise

the only time it gets annoying is when it's clearly just a ticket plug for some overpriced club night in roppongi with a fake theme. but those usually get downvoted into oblivion within an hour anyway. the community self-selects pretty well

ngl i've always thought the 10% rule was a joke for a city sub. like bro, if someone's organizing a pop-up market at 2k540 aki-oka artisan alley once a month, that's not spam, that's a service. i'd rather see that than the 18th "how do i make friends in tokyo" post of the week

the only time i get annoyed is when it's clearly just a repost of some gaijin party in kabukicho with a generic flyer and no actual info. those feel predatory. but the mods here have been pretty good at just letting the votes sort it out, and the obvious trash gets buried fast

fwiw i think the bigger issue is people not using the search bar before posting, not the occasional event promo. let the promoters post, worst case you scroll past it

mostly agree. the 10% rule is one of those reddit-isms that works for generic subs but not hyperlocal ones. i found out about the nakano broadway board game nights through a guy who was literally the host and it was way more useful than another "best ramen in shinjuku" thread

the only thing i'd add is that maybe we need a recurring weekly thread for events. keeps the front page clean and gives promoters a single spot to dump their stuff. could even sticky it, make it easier for people to find what's happening without scrolling through fifteen "anybody going to ultrajapan?" posts

but yeah, downvote the obvious cash grabs and let the useful stuff float. works fine in practice

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
