Is there any LINE shop or office I can go to in Tokyo to do the age verification in person? It's quite inconvenient that without age verification I cannot search for LINE IDs and cannot send money to individuals.

Your ward office is actually the underrated stop here, not for the verification itself but for the 個人番号カード reader setup. Many of them have a free counter terminal where staff will confirm your card's electronic certificate is active, which is the single most common reason the LINE scan fails silently. I did this at the Nakano ward office and it took maybe eight minutes, no appointment.

Separately, if your MVNO is a sub-brand riding on another network, check the LINE dropdown before assuming you're locked out. Mineo on docomo, for instance, sometimes shows up under a network name you don't recognize from your invoice. Bring your 在留カード if you're not Japanese, since the ward office will want photo ID and residence proof together.

If you've got a MyNumber card but no reader, the IC chip reader at a city ward office or a docomo shop counter can technically read it, but that doesn't help LINE because the verification has to happen inside the app itself. What actually works for some people is borrowing a friend's phone that has NFC, logging into your LINE there temporarily, doing the MyNumber scan, then logging out. The verification sticks to your account, not the device.

One thing nobody mentions: if your MyNumber card is the older plastic type without the digital certificate loaded at the konbini, the scan will fail silently. You can check and load it at any 7-Eleven kiosk for free in about 5 minutes. Did that for mine at the Shinjuku one near the west exit and it saved me a trip back to the ward office.

Worth knowing that the age verification dropdown in LINE pulls the carrier from your SIM's MCC/MNC, not from your billing name, so a parent-network setup like mineo on docomo usually still shows up as mineo itself. Where people actually get tripped up is having a data-only SIM registered to the LINE account, since there's no SMS number for the carrier check to match against.

If that's your situation, the MyNumber route is the only real path, and you don't need a physical reader if your phone has NFC. The plastic card works fine as long as the digital certificate is loaded, which you can do at a 7-Eleven kiosk or any ward office for free. I did mine at the Shibuya ward office counter and it took about ten minutes including the queue.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
