Hello there,

As the title says, I'm looking for a boardgame café/bar in Tokyo.

Is there one where I could hope to find games in English to play? Or games without needing to read in Japanese (as long as it's just the rules it's ok)

(Specifically looking for villainous disney really but I will take what I can find)

Thank you very much. I searched the sub but couldn't find anything recent.

Jelly Jelly Cafe in Shimokitazawa has a pretty solid English game selection, and they're used to foreign customers so the staff can explain rules in simple English. They don't have Disney Villainous specifically as far as I've seen, but they do stock a rotating mix of newer Western games.

For Villainous, your best bet is actually checking the boardgame shops like Yellow Submarine in Akihabara or Manga Souko secondhand stores. The Japanese version is fully playable without reading once you know the rules, and you can find it for around 3000 yen used. The cafe scene in Tokyo tends to focus on party games and Japanese titles rather than specific licensed games like that.

Yokohama's a bit of a trip but Board Game Players Cafe in Kannai has a huge English language section and I think I've seen Villainous there. They charge by the hour and the owner's pretty good about explaining stuff in English if you get stuck.

Honestly for Villainous you might have better luck at the bigger boardgame bars in Shinjuku like Table Games Square, they have a pretty huge library and I think Ive spotted it there before. Their staff can usually help with rules in English too if you ask.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
