Hello everyone!

I am planning on going to Tokyo at the end of August, for one month. I'm looking at the best neighborhood to stay in, that would combine being close to Iidabashi but also « the rest » of the city. My classes will occur daily from 9:30 to 12:30PM, so I will have a lot of time to explore, hence the importance of the location. For the moment Kagurazaka looks fine as the station would allow me to go around quite quickly? I am looking for a non-touristy but still cool and fun neighborhood, if such thing exists :)

Thanks a lot in advance!!

honestly, if you want non-touristy but still lively, take a look at Takadanobaba. it's one stop from Iidabashi on the Tozai line, 2 minutes. tons of students cause Waseda's right there, so cheap eats and izakayas everywhere. the vibe is messy and real, not polished at all. plus the Yamanote line goes through there so you can get to Shibuya or Shinjuku in like 10 mins without transferring.

Kagurazaka's nice but it's gotten more tourist attention lately, especially the little alleys. Takadanobaba feels more like actual daily life. just avoid the pachinko parlors near the station, they're a bit much.

Kagurazaka's a solid choice tbh, super close to Iidabashi and has that cool old-school vibe without being too touristy. I'd also look at Yotsuya or Ichigaya if you want something even quieter and still a short walk or train ride to class.

Iidabashi itself is fine for staying, pretty central and less busy than Shinjuku. You'd be surprised how quick the Tozai line gets you to places like Ueno or Nakano.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
