Why does anytime fitness get a bad rap?

So I never considered joining an anytime fitness because everyone always said that they were terrible and had limited facilities...

So I never considered joining an anytime fitness because everyone always said that they were terrible and had limited facilities...

But I recently moved to Ginza and there was an AF right next to me, so I decided to check it out. Guess what? The facilities are AMAZING. It's super clean, has every type of machine and free weights, as well as all the stretching and body movement accouterments that you could want.

Granted, it's not as huge as Oasis 24, but it's good enough for me and it's also never that packed, which is great. If I go during off hours, I feel like I have the entire place to myself.

Go to anytime fitness!

The Ginza location is a bit of an anomaly since it's in a high-rent commercial area, so the franchise owner has to keep it spotless to justify the premium membership fees. Most of the bad reputation comes from the older suburban locations where the equipment has been through a decade of heavy use without proper maintenance.

The key thing with Anytime Fitness in Tokyo is that each location is independently owned, so you're really at the mercy of who's running it. The one near Tokyo Station is also pretty solid if you ever need a backup, though it gets busier during lunch hours.

fwiw the Ginza location is prob the best AF in central Tokyo because it's in that weird dead zone between the office crowd and the late night crowd. Most of the bad AFs are in residential areas where they get constant rush hour traffic and the owners just give up on upkeep.

one thing nobody mentioned yet is that AF's whole business model is based on people signing up and never showing up. So when a location actually has active members who use the place, the equipment takes a beating way faster than at a bigger gym. Ginza being mostly suits who travel or work late means less wear and tear overall.

if you ever need a backup, the one in Nihonbashi is decent too but the changing room layout is weird, you have to walk through the stretching area to get to the lockers which gets awkward when someone's on the floor.

another thing people dont mention is that the Ginza one has those rare private shower stalls instead of the curtain-only setup most AFs have. huge difference when u actually want to hang out for a sec after your workout instead of rushing out

the real downside is the lockers are tiny, like barely fits a bag and jacket. if you carry a gym bag plus a work bag you're gonna be fighting for space. the one in Roppongi has bigger lockers but its way more crowded during lunch

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
