[META] There are too many sightseeing / travel photos. Can we clarify the sub rules for tourists?

As a resident, I get tired of sifting through photos of Tokyo that don't have any discussion, context, or relevancy to living here.

The photos are often beautiful, but they should go to /r/JapanTravel or elsewhere. This sub should focus on non-tourist content within Tokyo, whatever that means (no strong opinions from me)

Obviously, I downvote, but it won't remove them from the feed entirely.

How do others in this sub feel?

honestly I think the photo posts are fine as long as they have some context like "this is my route to work" or "look at this weird vending machine i found in my neighborhood". but the ones that are just "shinjuku at night" with no caption feel like karma farming. maybe mods could require a minimum comment from OP explaining why the photo matters to them as a resident. the daily life stuff is what keeps me here too, like the obachan at my local supermarket who always yells at the cashier for not double bagging her eggs. that's the real tokyo content.

yeah i feel this. the shinjuku gyoen cherry blossom pics in march are nice but i see the same angle every year. r/japantravel exists for a reason. i wish mods would push for more text posts about daily life stuff like the insanely crowded morning commute on the chuo line or how the combini bento quality actually dropped since 2020. that's more interesting to me than another shot of shibuya scramble at golden hour

ngl the photo spam is getting old but i think the bigger issue is how surface level most of the content here is. like i get it, you took a pic of the rainbow bridge from odaiba but tell me about the time your train got stuck for 40 mins on the yamanote line and everyone just silently accepted their fate. that's the real tokyo experience. mods could try a weekly photo thread or something, keep the pretty shots contained while letting the weird stuff breathe. fwiw i'd rather see someone's rant about the new suica card fees than another golden gai pic

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
