I didn't specify a sport because I'm not really picky, I like just about all sports. But if I had to name a few I'd like to target, it would be baseball, soccer or basketball.

As for location, I'd prefer the Suginami-Ku/Kichijoji area, but I can travel to other wards if need be.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

fwiw the suginami sports center is solid but for actual leagues, check the tokyo metropolitan sports association site, they list registered amateur teams that sometimes recruit. a bunch of the local ward offices also have "social sports" events posted on their bulletin boards, not just online, so swing by the kichijoji ward office and look at the community board on the first floor.

for soccer specifically, the futsal courts are your best bet since real outdoor leagues are mostly company teams or university alumni groups. adidas futsal park in shimokitazawa has open play but the sunday morning slot at the mitaka futsal arena is more of a regular crowd, people meet there weekly and split into teams on the spot.

basketball, there's an outdoor court near nishi-ogikubo station, behind the elementary school, that gets pickup games on saturday afternoons. it's not advertised anywhere, just show up around 2pm and you'll find a game. if you're looking for something with a bit more structure, the tokyo international basketball league on facebook does seasonal drafts, but that's more shibuya/minato based.

one thing nobody mentioned, join the "tokyo gaijins" facebook group, people post looking for subs for their baseball and soccer teams all the time. it's a bit chaotic but you can often find a spot within a week or two.

ngl, if you're in kichijoji, the easiest way into casual sports is through the local "sports shimin" (citizen sports) events. the suginami ward runs a bunch of one-off clinics and mini tournaments, especially in summer, and they're dead cheap. sign up at the ward office or online, but slots fill fast for anything in inokashira park.

for baseball specifically, skip the facebook groups if you want zero drama. there's a sunday morning pickup game at zenpukuji park that's been running for years, mostly older japanese guys who are happy to let foreigners join if you can catch and throw. just show up around 8am, bring a glove if you have one, and ask for "yakyu" (baseball). they're not on any app, pure word of mouth.

soccer-wise, the mitaka futsal arena is solid but if you want outdoor, head to the tama riverbed near chofu. there's a strip of fields by the river where random groups play saturday afternoons. it's a bit of a bike ride from kichijoji, but you'll see clusters of people and can just ask to jump in. no league, no fee, just bring water and a shirt to split teams.

basketball, honestly the nishi-ogikubo court tip is real, but it's hit or miss. the covered court at

honestly, your best bet is to hit up the local city sports centers, like the Suginami Sports Center near Koenji. they run pickup basketball and futsal sessions almost every weekend, and it's super cheap, like 300-500 yen for a few hours. just check their schedule online, some slots need reservations but walk-ins work too.

for baseball, there's a ton of casual adult teams in the area, but they're mostly found through word of mouth or the "Tokyo Softball & Baseball" Facebook group. it's a mixed bag, some are super chill, others are semi-serious, so just be upfront about your level. Kichijoji has a few parks with decent fields, like Inokashira Park, but games usually happen on weeknights or early Sunday mornings.

basketball-wise, if you're up for a bit of a trip, the Meiji Jingu Gaien courts in Shibuya are always packed with pickup games, and there's a good mix of skill levels. it's more of a show up and shoot around vibe, but people are friendly enough to let you join a 3v3. honestly, the most consistent thing is the futsal scene, tons of indoor courts in the area like Adidas Futsal Park in Shimokitazawa, they run daily open play slots.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
