I'm looking to capture the energy at cool nightlife events around Japan. Any good suggestions?

honestly if you want something more weird and underground, check out the area around Shimokitazawa. theres a spot called Three that does late night experimental music sets, sometimes noise or ambient stuff, and the crowd is a mix of artists and night owls just vibing. cover is usually like 1500 yen and it goes till 5am. also worth wandering down the main street toward the station around midnight, you'll hear live bands spilling out of tiny venues like Shelter or Fever, just follow the noise

if you want something less clubby and more like a moving party, check out the bar-hopping scene in Koenji. it's got that gritty 90s Tokyo energy with live houses and tiny bars spilling out onto the street, especially near the station. cover is usually just a drink charge, like 500 yen. the vibe is way more punk and indie than shibuya, but the crowd is genuinely there to have a wild night, not just pose for photos

For something totally different, try a night at a robot restaurant in Shinjuku. It's completely over-the-top with laser lights, dancers, and giant robots battling, and the crowd is a mix of tourists and locals who are just there for the absurd spectacle. The show runs about an hour and tickets are around 4000 yen, but you can grab a drink at the bar after and people-watch as everyone stumbles out onto the street buzzing. It's not a club, but the energy is pure Tokyo chaos.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
