Kaiseki on a Sunday?

Hello there! Hopefully this qualifies as a food question, instead of a tourism question - I know that tourism questions are banned in the rules!

My partner's birthday falls on a Sunday this year, and I would like to take her to a kaiseki restaurant - but I can't find a reputable one open on Sundays! Are there any such places you would recommend please? We can be flexible on specialties, location, and budget - thank you so much! (:

honestly sunday kaiseki is a pain but there are a few that work. ryugin in roppongi does a sunday lunch set that's around 15000 yen and it's legit, the chef's got a michelin star so it's not some tourist trap. their lunch is a bit shorter than dinner but still feels like a proper kaiseki experience. you'll need to call about 3 weeks out, they fill up fast on weekends.

if you want something more lowkey, try kanda in jimbocho. they're closed mondays so sunday is actually their last day of the week and they do a relaxed kaiseki course, about 12000 yen. the chef is known for his dashi so the soup course is the highlight. book through their website, they have an english reservation system that's pretty straightforward.

for something diffrent, check out den in jingu-mae. they're open sunday for dinner and do a modern take on kaiseki, around 20000 yen. the vibe is way less formal than traditional places so it's good for a birthday without feeling stuffy. they take reservations 2 months out and fill up fast so jump on it early

a few places do kaiseki on sundays, actually. shin hinomoto in ginza does a lunch kaiseki that's pretty solid and they're open sunday, about 8000-12000 yen per person. for dinner, try kikunoi's akasaka location - they take sunday reservations but book a month ahead, it's around 15000 yen. if budget's not a thing, ishikawa in kagurazaka is open sunday too but you'll need a concierge to call for you, runs closer to 25000. just check if they're doing takeout or shortened courses, some places tweak their menu on weekends

For a Sunday kaiseki, I'd recommend checking out Ukiyo in Kagurazaka. They do a lunch kaiseki around 10000 yen that's really thoughtful, and Sundays are actually one of their calmer days. The chef used to work at Kikunoi so the technique is solid. Just be aware they're a small place, maybe 8 seats, so you'll want to reserve at least two weeks out. Another option is Nadai Fujisoba in Azabu Juban, they run a seasonal kaiseki course on Sundays that's more casual but still hits the right notes for a birthday dinner.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
