honestly just wander around shimokitazawa for an afternoon. it's got this messy vintage charm with tiny record shops and secondhand clothing stores that feels nothing like the rest of tokyo. grab a coffee at bear pond espresso if it's open, then hit up the thrift stores on the main strip before they get picked over. way more interesting than shibuya crossing tbh

imo the teamlab borderless in azabudai hills is the one thing i'd drag every visitor to. it's not just the digital art installations, they actually change with the seasons so it's never the same twice. book tickets for a weekday morning if u can, the crowds get insane after 1pm. the crystal world room alone is worth the trip, feels like walking through a kaleidoscope

if you can handle a bit of a trek, go to kamakura for the day. it's just an hour south on the train but feels like a whole different world. the giant buddha at kotoku-in is cool and all, but honestly the best part is hiking through the bamboo grove at hokokuji temple and grabbing some matcha there. way more chill than the touristy spots in central tokyo

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
