Im getting a visa through my Japanese wife. I want to inquire on the status but every time we call it hangs up as they are too busy. Has anyone gone to immigration in Tokyo to check up on it in person ? If so, is there a specific line or office o should go to?

Thank you

Going in person is really the only reliable way to get an answer. Just be prepared for a long morning, the queues start forming before the building opens at 9am. If you can, have your wife come with you to the counter, they tend to be more accommodating when the Japanese spouse is standing right there. Also bring your residence card and any receipt they gave you when you applied, it makes the lookup faster.

yeah going in person is def the move. just heads up, the 1st floor inquiry window can be a bit hidden, so ask a guard if you're lost. also bring a printout of your receipt or application number if you still have it, they'll prob ask for that. tbh they're usually nicer in person than on the phone

honestly yeah going in person is way more effective than calling. the main Tokyo immigration office in Shinagawa has a general counter on the 2nd floor but for spouse visa inquiries u want the "Status Inquiry" window on the 1st floor near the back left corner. get there by 8:30am at latest or u'll be waiting forever, bring your wife and her ID too just in case. they gave me a printout saying "under review" when I went at 4 months but at least I knew it wasnt lost

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
