Hi,

Unusual request- I want to see Purple Magnolias aka 紫木蓮. White ones seem fairly common but I'm having trouble locating the purple variant.

Googling I found this one, but it only says „足立区綾瀬", not the exact location. I don't want to go to that area and then aimlessly wander around.

If there are any Ayase residents who know where this tree is, or where I can find purple Magnolia I'd be very thankful and happy 🙏🏻🙏🏻

imo just walk around the quieter residential streets in Ayase near the station, the purple magnolia is probably in someone's front yard not a park. I've seen a few in Setagaya too, like near the Todoroki valley path, they pop up in random gardens around late March. if you're set on that specific tree, maybe try asking at the local koban or a convenience store, old ladies usually know where the pretty trees are

the Ayase tree is prob in the park near the ayase station south exit, that area has a small green space with a mix of flowering trees. if you head towards the arakawa river along the green path there are a few scattered in people's front gardens too, not just public spots

fwiw I've seen purple magnolias at Koishikawa Korakuen garden, they have a couple near the main pond area. it's a bit early for full bloom but should be starting any day now. entry is like 300 yen and it's way less crowded than Shinjuku Gyoen

honestly you could try some of the bigger botanical gardens like Jindai or Shinjuku Gyoen they tend to have a few odd varieties mixed in. or just check street tree maps online sometimes neighborhoods plant them without fanfare

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
