oh man the sakura shrimp tempura donburi at Sakura Ebi no Sato is legit. i went there last spring and the view of Fuji was crystal clear, made the meal even better. one thing the guide didnt mention - they also have a sakura ebi cracker snack set for like 500 yen that's perfect for munching on while walking around Yui station
also for the oden at Aoi Tower, tbh i prefer going later in the evening around 7pm when the crowd dies down. the broth gets richer after simmering all day and the daikon is super soft. grab a seat at the counter if u can, the old guy running it is friendly and might throw in an extra skewer if you chat him up a bit
good write-up, covers most of the classics. one thing i'd add for the shimizu fish market - if you go on a weekday morning around 7am you can sometimes catch the tuna auction getting started, they let you watch from a little viewing area near the back. also for the sakura shrimp, the tempura donburi is great but the raw sakura ebi sashimi they do seasonally (usually march to june) is something else, super sweet and almost creamy texture, it's like 1,800 yen at the same place
honestly the wasabi ice cream at the farm is more of a novelty than anything, it's mild and creamy but the real play is getting the fresh wasabi root to grate at home. they sell them for like 800 yen and it lasts weeks in the fridge, way better than the tube stuff from grocery stores. also if you go to the Shimizu fish market, skip the sushi places and grab a seat at the standing soba stall near the entrance, they do a bonito broth soba for 500 yen that's incredible and way less crowded than the tourist spots
Shizuoka photo spots in 2 months?
For landscapes, head up to Nihondaira early in the morning when the light hits Suruga Bay just right. You'll get the classic view of Mt. Fuji over the tea fields if the weather cooperates, and there's a ropeway that takes you down to Kunozan Toshogu if you want a different angle. For city views, the top of the Shizuoka City Hall observation deck is free and gives you a solid 360 of the city and port. If you want something less touristy, walk along the Abe River from the Abekawa LRT station around sunset - the riverbed opens up wide and you can frame the city skyline against the mountains behind it.
If you're after something that blends landscape with a bit of industrial character, walk the path along the Shimizu Port area near the old warehouse district. There's a stretch by the canal where the shipping containers and cranes frame Mt. Fuji in a way that feels more raw than the postcard spots. I like it late afternoon when the light catches the rust on the metal and the water turns a flat silver. It's a ten minute walk from the Shimizu Station east exit, just head toward the water and follow the smell of salt and diesel.
honestly the best view i've found is from the top of Shizunami beach cliffs on a clear day. park at the Tsurugamine lookout point around 4pm and watch the sun hit the coastline, you can see all the way to Omaezaki if the air's clear. theres a little shrine tucked into the rocks there too, makes for a moody foreground shot with the city in the distance
for city views, try the rooftop of the Shizuoka City Museum of Art around golden hour. its free and way less crowded than City Hall, plus you get the cherry trees in frame if you're lucky with the timing. the light hits the Aoba Park below and bounces up real nice
