They appear to be responding to many urgent calls. Given their formal attire and luxury cars, I initially thought they might be detectives, but the high volume of emergency responses seems unusual for that role. What type of law enforcement or special unit might this be, and why would they have so many urgent calls?

thats most likely the carabinieri or polizia di stato in a volante, the plainclothes ones in suits are probably squadra mobile or the Nucleo Investigativo. the fancy cars are just unmarked service vehicles, alfa giulias and bmws mostly, nothing glamorous. sirens on a lot bc rome traffic is chaos & theyre always running somewhere, not necessarily high crime

Rome also has the Vigili Urbani, though the suited guys with sirens are usually not them. What you might be seeing near the center is the Polizia Locale di Roma Capitale doing escort duty for dignitaries or official events, since the city hosts a lot of those. If it's near the Vatican, could be Gendarmeria or the Swiss Guard support, but they stick closer to the walls.

A lot of those are actually Carabinieri from the Nucleo Radiomobile or the Guardia di Finanza, they wear plain clothes when they're on certain duties so they don't stand out. The sirens get used constantly because they escort things, run checks, and handle a ton of paperwork calls that technically count as emergencies. If you're near a Questura or a courthouse you'll see way more of them than usual.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
