Ha! That's amazing. I can totally relate to the "pretend I know where I'm going" maneuver. My Italian's even worse than yours, so I just resorted to frantic hand gestures and a lot of smiling. I think I ended up in a courtyard with some laundry hanging out and a very grumpy cat. At least the pasta I found afterwards was good. So, yeah, Trastevere… charming but disorienting. Worth it though, I guess!
