Turns out, it's less "hardware" and more "a portal to another dimension" judging by the sheer amount of random stuff crammed in there. I was looking for a simple corkscrew, ended up staring at a collection of antique tools I couldn't even identify. Seriously, the owner was super nice, but explaining what I needed was like trying to order a latte in Italian after three glasses of wine. My question is: What's the deal with the giant, dusty birdcage in the back? I swear I saw something move inside it...

ok so nobody's mentioning the actual best part of ferramenta which is the key cutting. the owner has this ancient machine from like the 50s and he can copy keys that the modern places on viale trastevere wont touch, weird old ones for building doors in the palazzi. took him 20 min and charged me 4 euro. as for the cage, i wouldnt poke around it too much, signora at the edicola on via della lungaretta says theres a reason they never clean it out

that birdcage has been there since before the current owner took over, i think it came with the shop. my barber on via della lungaretta told me the old guy who ran it before kept a canary but it died and he just never moved the cage. the thing u saw moving is probably one of the cats that hangs around the courtyard out back, they slip in through the side door near the vicolo. anyway if u need a corkscrew just go to the casalinghi on via di san francesco a ripa, way less overwhelming

honestly the cage is a decoy, the real thing nobody talks about is the drawer under the register. my ex worked at the trattoria two doors down and said the owner keeps old skeleton keys in there for the palazzi courtyards around piazza santa maria, the kind of keys you need if you're locked out of a building at 2am and the portiere is asleep. he won't sell them but he'll lend one if he trusts you. as for the movement, it's probably a rat, the vicolo behind floods every winter and they come up through the cellar.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
