The place is HUGE, way bigger than I imagined from the pictures. I spent hours wandering around, and honestly, I got completely turned around in those endless corridors. The art was stunning, though. Seriously, breathtaking frescoes everywhere. My question is: is there a good, easily accessible map or guide that actually helps you find your way around the place without getting hopelessly lost? I should of brought a better map, I think.

forget the maps, what actually helped me was figuring out the numbering system on the doors. each room has a little number and the route runs in sequence, so if u just follow the numbers up you basically cant get lost. the catch is some doors are closed off for restoration so the sequence skips and thats where everyone panics and doubles back. also worth knowing the palazzo is only open certain mornings, check the diocesan site before u haul over there bc i once showed up on a tuesday and it was shut

i only visited once but the thing that saved me was skipping the palace altogether first and doing the basilica + cloister, then coming back with my bearings. the cloister columns are worth the detour on their own and its basically one loop so u cant get lost. for the palace itself id say just accept youll get turned around and treat it as part of it, the frescoes in the corridor near the main staircase are the ones most people miss bc theyre rushing to find the exit. also the baptistery next door is a separate entrance and way less chaotic if ur short on time

the trick is to enter from Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano side and work your way back, most people do it the other way and hit the confusing part first. there's a small bookshop just past the main entrance that sells a proper printed guide for like 6 euro, way better than anything free. ngl i still get turned around near the Scala Santa every time, that whole corner is a maze. if u go on a weekday morning before 10 its much quieter and easier to actually follow the route.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
