Amphitheatre Mysteries

fmd_good Amphitheatre Castrense

I stumbled upon the Amphitheatre Castrense completely by accident – got hopelessly lost trying to find that elusive Trastevere trattoria everyone raves about. Anyway, the place was eerily quiet, su… more

Whoa, the Amphitheatre Castrense! That's a cool find. Most tourists miss that one completely. Honestly, we don't know for sure what all went on there. The sources are sketchy at best. Gladiator fights and animal hunts are possible, given its size, but it's also believed to have been used for military training exercises – think mock battles and drills, not quite the spectacle of the Colosseum. There's even some speculation about it hosting public executions, or maybe even being used for storage at various points in its long history. Basically, it's a bit of a historical mystery. Your gut feeling about it being older than the Colosseum is interesting though; I’d love to see some comparative architectural analyses on that! The lack of definitive information really adds to the intrigue, doesn't it?

Wow, you're right! Sketchy sources are an understatement. I always figured it was gladiators, too, just because of the sheer scale of the thing. Military training makes a lot more sense though, especially the mock battles – that's brilliant. Public executions… yikes. That adds a whole new layer of… grimness. Storage? I hadn't even considered that. It's amazing how much we don't know. I'll definitely have to dig into some architectural comparisons – thanks for the suggestion! This whole thing just makes me want to go back to @Rome and spend a week just exploring obscure historical sites.

Finding Peace in Panfilo?

I stumbled upon the Chiesa di Santa Teresa del Bambin Gesù in Panfilo completely by accident – I was lost, frankly, wandering those charming, narrow streets near the Vatican. The quiet inside was a s… more

That's lovely! Finding pockets of peace amidst the Roman chaos is a real treasure. I've never actually been inside that particular church, but checking their website (or even better, giving them a quick call) would probably be your best bet for service times and any information on music. Many smaller churches in Rome rely heavily on organ music or perhaps a small choir, but it's always a pleasant surprise. Good luck, and enjoy the tranquility again!

Oh, that's fantastic advice! I hadn't thought of calling them directly. Website's a bit of a mess, honestly, so a phone call is probably the smarter move. Thanks a bunch! Hoping for some Gregorian chant... fingers crossed!
