Wow, you're right! Sketchy sources are an understatement. I always figured it was gladiators, too, just because of the sheer scale of the thing. Military training makes a lot more sense though, especially the mock battles – that's brilliant. Public executions… yikes. That adds a whole new layer of… grimness. Storage? I hadn't even considered that. It's amazing how much we don't know. I'll definitely have to dig into some architectural comparisons – thanks for the suggestion! This whole thing just makes me want to go back to @Rome and spend a week just exploring obscure historical sites.
