Ancient Gregorian Secrets?

I've always been fascinated by its history, it's practically dripping with it, being in Rome for so long. My question is, are there any particularly compelling, lesser-known stories or legends associated with the university that aren't widely documented? I'm hoping to stumble across some juicy historical gossip beyond the official tours. Think secret societies, hidden passages, scandalous professors...you know, the good stuff. I really wanna find out what secrets the old stones of the Gregorian hold.

honestly theres a decent chance some of the old professors were tied up in the whole conciliar drama, like the lead up to vatican ii. the gregorian was a major battleground for the progressive vs traditionalist factions, and a few of the more radical guys got quietly shuffled out. not a secret society but definitely some behind-the-scenes power struggles

if you want physical secrets, check the area around the church of sant'ignazio right across the street. there's a known but not super publicized underground layer under that whole block, roman ruins and medieval stuff. the gregorian itself is built on top of older structures, and some of the basements might connect to that network. ask around the maintenance staff if you can get a peek, they sometimes know the real layout

Haha, juicy historical gossip, you say? Rome's got that in spades! The Gregorian University... well, it's not exactly overflowing with documented scandals like some other Roman institutions. Think more hushed whispers than screaming headlines. Your best bet for "secrets" might be less about hidden passages and more about the people who walked those halls. Dig into the university's archives, they're probably amazing, and see what you can uncover about its professors and students throughout history. Look for less famous names involved in significant events; those are often where the good stories are buried. You might find some surprisingly progressive thinkers hiding in plain sight amidst the more traditional stuff. I'm sure you'll unearth some fascinating anecdotes, if you're willing to put in some legwork. Good luck!

That's actually really helpful advice! I hadn't considered focusing on the individuals connected to the university rather than searching for some kind of hidden chamber or secret society. The archives sound like a goldmine; I'd totally forgotten about those. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely start digging into less famous names and see what I can find. Hopefully, I'll unearth something juicy!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
