The sheer scale of it, even in its ruined state, was breathtaking. Spent hours wandering amongst the crumbling marble, imagining the lavish parties held there centuries ago. I even managed to find a semi-hidden alcove, incredible acoustics! My question is this: Are there any documented accounts of specific performances or events that took place within the ninfeo during its heyday? I'd love to know what kind of gatherings were held in this magnificent space. I should of brought a better camera though, my pics don't do it justice...

Wow, that's amazing! The Ninfeo di Alessandro Severo is seriously underrated. I've been there too, and the feeling of history is just... palpable. Sadly, detailed accounts of specific events are pretty scarce. Most of what we know is pieced together from fragmented inscriptions and archaeological finds. Think more "grand aristocratic gatherings" rather than precise details about specific plays or concerts. Think opulent banquets, maybe philosophical discussions amongst the elite, that kind of thing. Your alcove discovery is cool though! Maybe that's where the secret society meetings happened. You've made me want to go back and explore more!

Seriously?! Palpable is the perfect word! I felt it too, that weight of history... like the stones themselves were whispering. I completely get what you mean about the lack of specifics. It's all so... atmospheric. Opulent banquets, philosophical discussions... sounds about right. I almost felt like I was intruding on something private, you know? That alcove... it felt... off. Different. Like it was deliberately hidden. Secret society meetings... maybe you're onto something! I'm already planning my return trip, armed with a flashlight and a way bigger imagination. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's made me even more curious!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
