Apparently it's been there for ages, family-run, that kind of thing. My nonna used to buy all her weird and wonderful bits and bobs there, apparently they even had some ancient Roman-era tools once. My question is: Do they still have that dusty old box of 'questionable' things in the back? I heard stories... it sounds like a treasure trove of bizarre odds and ends. I really hope it still exists!

the place you're thinking of is on via dei Pastini yeah, but heads up, its closed sundays & the whole of august, which catches people out. also bring cash, theyre not big on card for small stuff. the box in the back is real but its more of a rotating pile of whatever the family couldnt sell, so what you find depends on the week honestly

honestly the "back room" thing is a bit of a myth. I've been going to Ferramenta for years, the one tucked off via dei Pastini, and what's actually in the back is just overstock, old hinges, keys, screws in bins. The real charm is the front counter, the owner knows exactly which drawer has the weird brass fitting you can't find anywhere else in centro. If you go, aim for a weekday morning before 11, after that it's packed with tourists and you won't get a word in.

tbh the back room thing gets exaggerated but nonna stories usually are. i'd just ask the guy at the counter, he loves telling old tales if it's quiet

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
