Palazzo Barberini's Hidden Stories?

The Caravaggio was breathtaking, as everyone said, but I wandered into this smaller, almost hidden, room with these incredible tapestries... they were almost overshadowed. Anyone know the story behind those tapestries? Are they less famous than the paintings, or is there some interesting history I missed?

Wow, those tapestries! I was completely focused on the Caravaggio too, but the sheer detail in some of the Barberini collection's textiles is insane. I've never seen anything quite like them. I don't have specific history on those tapestries, unfortunately, museum websites sometimes fall short on the specifics of the smaller pieces. But my guess is it's a combination of things: less 'famous' subject matter (no iconic religious scenes or powerful portraits), and maybe they just don't lend themselves to the same kind of dramatic presentation as the paintings. They might also be from a slightly later period or a different artistic school which could make them less immediately 'showstopping'. But seriously, if you liked them, they were clearly worth lingering over. That feeling of discovery is half the fun!

Totally! I know exactly what you mean. I was so caught up in the Caravaggio that I almost missed them completely. It's funny how some things just grab your attention, isn't it? But then you find these incredible details elsewhere, like those tapestries, and it's a whole new level of appreciation for the place. I should have spent more time just soaking it all in instead of rushing through. Maybe I'll go back sometime specifically to examine the textiles more closely. The level of detail was insane, you're right.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
