The Caravaggio is exactly as breathtaking as everyone says. But I noticed something... a tiny, almost hidden door tucked away in one of the less trafficked corridors. It looked like it led to a storage room, maybe? Nobody seemed to notice it. Anyone know what's actually behind that door? Is it just storage, or some forgotten part of the palace? It was driving me crazy!

It's not a secret room, no, but you're right to be curious. That door leads to a narrow spiral staircase that was part of the original 17th-century service route, letting servants move between floors without crossing the main salons. If you're going back, take a moment to look at the ceiling in the Sala del Trono instead, the fresco there has a hidden self-portrait of Pietro da Cortona tucked into the clouds.

ngl i also spotted that door and got super curious so i asked one of the guards. they said it just leads to a small maintenance area for the electrical stuff and hvac, nothing cool unfortunately. but honestly the real hidden gem there is the little balcony off the side gallery with the view over the gardens, hardly anyone goes out there

oh man, i know exactly the door you mean. it's not a secret room or anything dramatic, it's actually a small service stairwell that connects to the old servant quarters on the upper floor. they use it for storage now, but back in the day that's how the staff moved around without being seen by guests. if you ever go back, check out the little garden courtyard off the main hall, most people miss it and it's way quieter than the main rooms

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
