Via Appia Antica itself is the real payoff and most people rush it in a taxi. Walk the stretch from Porta San Sebastiano down toward Cecilia Metella on a Sunday when the road closes to cars, and you get the whole thing to yourself, pine trees, broken colombaria, the occasional flock of sheep. Bring water because there's nothing between the gate and the tomb of Caecilia, and the cobbles will wreck thin soles. The quiet you felt at the Sepolcro is just what that road does when the traffic's gone.
ngl the guilt thing is real, i still feel weird photographing tombs. one practical note though, that stretch around viale della serenissima gets sketchy after dark and there's no lighting, so go in daylight. also the carvings you couldn't read are prob latin funerary formula, dis manibus and all that, pretty standard for a monument that got relocated. next time bring a phone with a translation app and you'll get most of it in five min.
the inscription is actually one of the best surviving examples of a carmen epigraphicum, the meter is hexameter then pentameter, and its dated to the 1st c AD. what gets me is the line where his dad says the boy was taken before his time, its genuinely moving for something 2000 yrs old. if u liked that one the tomb of eurysaces the baker near porta maggiore is worth a look too, totally different vibe but same "hidden in plain sight" feeling

What are current tobacco prices for LM Blue or Chesterfield Blue?
tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits
Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.
LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
