Heard it's a beautiful old building, apparently steeped in history. Anyone know if they still have those old frescoes somewhere within the school? I'd love to see them if they're still accessible

yeah the frescoes are still there, tucked away in the main staircase area, but they're not exactly open to the public. if you're at the conference though, just ask the janitor, signor alberto, he's been there forever and sometimes lets people peek during breaks. honestly the building's cooler from the outside, the real gem is the hidden courtyard garden behind the gym, nobody knows about it but it's a nice spot to eat a panino if you find it unlocked.

The frescoes are real, but they're mostly in the restoration phase right now, so you might catch them half-cleaned if you get lucky. What most people miss is the old well in the inner courtyard, it's been there since the 1600s and the school still uses it for rainwater collection, which is a nice bit of living history. If you have a free afternoon, wander over to Via dei Banchi Vecchi afterwards, it's a ten minute walk and has better coffee than anything near the school.

oh the frescoes are def still there, but honestly the coolest part is the old chapel on the second floor. it's been converted into a storage room but the ceiling's covered in faded gold leaf, looks like a secret. if the conference crowd is too much, slip out during lunch and check the back stairwell, that's where the original marble floor tiles are, all worn down from centuries of kids.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
