The detail is insane! Seriously, it's like a massive, stone comic book detailing Trajan's Dacian wars. I got completely lost in it, almost missed my reservation at Armando al Pantheon for dinner! My question is: Are there any guided tours that really delve into the historical significance of each scene depicted? I'd love a deeper understanding beyond the basic Wikipedia stuff.

honestly, if you want the real deep dive, skip the big group tours and look for one of the archaeology students from La Sapienza who do freelance guiding around the column. they'll walk u through each spiral, talking about the actual logistics of the war and the propaganda angles the Romans used. i did one a couple years back and the guy even pointed out the hidden details like the severed heads and the river god crossing, stuff most guides breeze past. it was like 30 euros for a solid hour and a half and way more specific than any viator thing.

Have you checked if the museum underneath the column does their own tours? I heard they have a small group thing that goes through the plaster casts with a curator, explains all the battle formations and siege stuff. Way better than squinting up from the sidewalk

ngl i just used the official audio guide and it was decent enough but i bet the real stuff is in the books at the Museo della Civilta Romana. they have full scale plaster replicas of the whole column there so u can actually get up close without craning ur neck. might be

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
