Found Ferramenta, this tiny, cluttered place tucked down a side street near the Pantheon. The owner, a wizened old guy with hands like gnarled olive branches, barely spoke English but understood my frantic gestures. He rummaged through mountains of dusty hardware, eventually producing not just the hinge, but a whole box of identical ones, clearly salvaged from some demolition project. He grinned, shrugged, and charged me next to nothing. It was amazing! But...what was the story behind those hinges? Where did they come from?!

honestly those hinges were almost certainly from a palazzo near via giulia, that whole area's been getting gutted for boutique hotels for years. the demolition crews there know the ferramenta guys by name, they'll set aside the good stuff before the skip even hits the ground. you got lucky, most of that hardware ends up in the hands of antiquari who'll charge you fifty euros a pop

tbh that sounds like stuff from the palazzo barberini side wings they auctioned off like a decade ago. my uncle works in restauro and he remembers a whole load of wrought iron hinges going to a few ferramenta guys near the pantheon. those old palazzi have layers of hardware from different centuries, so you might have 1700s pieces mixed with 1900s replacements. the fact he had a whole box means he prob bought a lot of fifty or sixty pieces for pennies, then just sells them one at a time to people like us who actually care. if you're ever back, grab a coffee at sant'eustachio and ask the barista about the old hardware shops, they know everyone

could be from the old teatro valle renovation a few years back, they stripped that place down to the bones and the guy near piazza navona grabbed a bunch of the salvaged stuff. i saw similar hinges at his shop once, same patina and that weird squared-off pin. if you go back, ask him about the teatro stuff, he gets weirdly chatty about it and might even show you the receipts from the demolition company

What are current tobacco prices for LM Blue or Chesterfield Blue?

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
