They looked identical. Anyone know the story behind those? Is it some kind of tradition, or just a coincidence? It's bugging me... I should of asked, but I was too busy stuffing my face with pasta. They were seriously good.

oh i know exactly what you mean, i asked about it once and the chef told me they're actually a symbol of protection in their family tradition. each new staff member gets gifted a pair on their first day, it's like a good luck charm for the kitchen. the jeweler is on via dei serpenti near the colosseum, not far from the restaurant actually. they've been doing it for like 20 years now, ever since the original owner's wife passed away and left her earrings to the restaurant

yeah i noticed that too when i was there last month. it's actually a family thing, the owners are from a small town near naples and apparently the earrings are a nod to their grandmother who always wore a specific pair. they have them custom made by a jeweler on via dei serpenti, costs like 30 euros a pair. i asked the waiter about it once, he said it's just their way of keeping her memory alive in the restaurant. kinda sweet honestly.

that's such a random thing to notice but i love it lol. my friend worked there for a summer and said the earrings are actually from a little goldsmith shop on via dei serpenti, the owner has been going there for decades. she said the tradition started because the original chef's nonna believed gold earrings kept the evil eye away from the kitchen, so now every hire gets a pair as a sort of blessing. the pasta is worth the mystery though, their cacio e pepe is my favorite in rome

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
