The photos look amazing, but the menu's all in Italian, and I'm... well, let's just say my Italian's about as good as my attempts at opera singing. Seriously, it's awful. Anyone know if they have a translation somewhere, or even better, what are some must-try dishes? I'm dying to know what makes this place so popular! I hear the locals rave about it.

imo the real move is going for lunch instead of dinner. way less crowded and you can grab a seat on the piazza without waiting an hour. the lunch menu has a couple things the dinner one doesnt, like the pasta e fagioli which is super simple but done right

if you're into wine ask for the house red, it's from some small producer in lazio and costs like 4 euros a glass. beats paying 12 for something you could get anywhere

Don't worry about the Italian menu, it's pretty standard for the good places in Trastevere. The handwritten daily specials board near the entrance is where the real magic is, and the owner is usually happy to walk you through it in broken English if you just ask.

Their pasta alla Gricia is what I'd point you to over the cacio e pepe, it's a bit richer with the guanciale and the pecorino is sharp as hell. If you're there on a Thursday, the baccalà (salt cod) fritters are a must, they fry them up fresh around lunchtime and they sell out fast.

honestly the artichokes are the real sleeper hit there. if they have carciofi alla giudia on the menu that day just get it without even looking at anything else. it's a jewish-roman classic and they do it perfect, super crispy

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
