I've read about its fascinating history, but all the pictures I've seen are pretty... underwhelming. I mean, it's mostly ruins, right? I'm curious though, what's the best time of day to visit to get the best lighting for photos? I really want to capture the atmosphere, the feeling of history. I'm hoping for that "wow" factor. It would be a shame to go all the way to see it and just get some blah pictures

Just go at golden hour, it hits the brickwork differently than the other times mentioned. The shadows stretch out across the ruins and give it some depth.

ngl the best time is actually early morning right when it opens, like 7:30-8am. the light comes from the east and hits the curved wall directly, makes those brick textures really dramatic. plus you'll have the place almost to yourself since most tourists dont bother coming here

if you want that wow factor, dont just stand in front of it. go to the little park on via di porta maggiore, there's a bench near the tram tracks where you can frame it with the old aqueduct bricks in the foreground. gives you that layered rome feel without the modern street clutter

honestly the amphitheatre castrense is more about the vibe than a grand reveal, it's tucked into a wall near porta maggiore and doesn't scream 'colosseum' but that's kind of its charm. for photos i'd go late afternoon around 4pm when the sun hits the brickwork from the southwest, makes the old reds and oranges pop against the shadow of the modern street. also, walk around the back side on via nola for a shot with the aqueduct arches in the foreground, gives it that layered roman history feel without the crowds

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
