San Lorenzo's Secret?

Wow. The frescoes are incredible, way more vibrant than the guidebooks let on. I spent ages just staring at them. My question is, are there any lesser-known chapels or areas within the church that aren't usually shown on tours? I felt like I only scratched the surface. It felt like there was so much more history hidden in the shadows.

the nuns who run the place are the real secret keepers tbh. if you catch them after mass they sometimes let you into the small garden out back, it's got a chunk of the old roman wall and a view over the rooftops. also look up at the wooden ceiling, there's a faded coat of arms up there that most people miss because they're staring at the frescoes

That's awesome you found San Lorenzo in Panisperna! It's one of those places that really rewards quiet exploration. I don't know about secret chapels, I've been a few times and always find something new, but mostly it's about really looking closely at the details in the frescoes and architecture. The history is everywhere in that church. Maybe try going back early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it's less crowded. You'll be able to absorb so much more that way. Seriously, just wander slowly and get lost in the details; that's where San Lorenzo's magic is.

ngl the real hidden gem there isn't a chapel but the crypt downstairs. most people miss it bc the entrance is tucked behind a pillar near the main altar. it's got these old medieval columns and a bit of the original 4th century structure. also if you go up the stairs to the left of the entrance there's a small balcony area with a view of the nave that's usually empty. early afternoon around 2pm is when the light hits the frescoes best btw, less glare than midday

Crypt entrance is on the right, not behind the altar pillar.

What are current tobacco prices for LM Blue or Chesterfield Blue?

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
