Heard whispers about some seriously cool hidden passages and secret rooms, stuff that's not even in the tourist guides. Anyone been? Any tips on uncovering these legendary lost bits of history? I'm prepared for a bit of a scavenger hunt, I love that kind of thing! Seriously hoping to find something nobody else has found, you know?

the lateran palace is cool but tbh the real hidden stuff isn't inside the main building. walk around the back near the scala santa and look for the old medieval gate with the faded frescoes, it's easy to miss and most tourists just walk past. also if you're into lost history, the cloister next door has some weird inscriptions on the columns that don't match anything in the guidebooks, i spent an hour there just trying to decode them. just be ready for the guards to give you a look if you linger too long

fwiw theres a little known entrance to the palazzo's old stables off via dei laterani, not the main square. the door is usually unlocked during weekday afternoons and leads into a courtyard with a medieval well and some graffiti from the 1500s. nobody ever goes there because its just a plain brown door with no sign, i walked past it three times before i noticed

also if ure feeling adventurous theres a small crypt under the baptistery next door that they open for like 2 hours on thursdays. noone talks about it because the priest who runs it is like 90 and doesnt advertise. just knock on the side door around 3pm and say you were told about the mosaic floor

oh yeah the palace itself is cool but honestly the real hidden gem is the little oratory of saint john tucked away in the corner of the cloister. most people miss it because it's behind a random door that looks like a closet. i only found it cause i got lost looking for a bathroom. there's this tiny fresco cycle in there that's supposedly from the 1200s and it's just chilling no guard no rope just you and some seriously old art

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
