I've heard whispers, locals mentioning a hidden courtyard or something, a secret spot used for student gatherings maybe, back in the day. It's not listed anywhere online. Is this just a silly rumour, or is there actually some little-known, tucked-away part of the school's history I could stumble upon? Anyone know anything about this?

wait are u thinking of the confraternita or the actual scuola though, bc theyre two different buildings and ppl mix them up constantly. the san giovanni evangelista complex on via della lungara is the confraternity one with the oratory, that garden behind the cloister is real but its not a student hangout thing, its where they sheltered condemned prisoners the night before execution back in the 1500s. kinda dark for a "secret courtyard" rumour lol. if u want the school part thats more the area near piazza san giovanni della malva, different vibe entirely

The Scuola sits right by the church of San Giovanni Evangelista on Via della Lungara, and the "hidden" part people whisper about is almost certainly the little garden behind the cloister, reached through a side door off the portico. It was tied to the Confraternita di San Giovanni Decollato, the brotherhood that ran the place, and they used the space for private gatherings, not students in the modern sense. If you want to see it, don't just show up, ask the custodian at the entrance, weekday afternoons after 3 are your best bet, and a small donation doesn't hurt.

If you're set on the Via della Lungara building, the thing worth knowing is that the Confraternita di San Giovanni Decollato ran a small cemetery plot in front of the church too, and that's the bit that trips people up when they go looking for a "courtyard." The garden behind the portico is real, but the more interesting layer is that condemned prisoners were marched from the nearby Corte Savella prison down Via della Lungara on their last night, and the brothers kept them in a room off that same space. So the "student gatherings" story is probably a garbled version of something much older and grimmer. If you want to actually get in, weekday mornings before noon are when the custodian tends to be around, and mentioning you're interested in the confraternity specifically rather than the scuola will get you further than asking about a secret garden. Entry is usually free but they appreciate a couple of euros for the upkeep.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
