I've read about the catacombs beneath it, apparently, they're extensive and hold a ton of history. My question is: are any sections of the catacombs off-limits to the public, or are guided tours comprehensive enough to see everything of significance? I'm a sucker for exploring hidden passageways and ancient stuff. The whole thing sounds intensely atmospheric, almost spooky... and I love that. Spent three hours wandering around the Pantheon earlier this year

yeah the catacombs at sant'agnese are legit, the guided tour gets you through the main bits but there's a few smaller chambers they keep locked for preservation reasons. you won't miss much though, the open sections are already super atmospheric with those narrow tunnels and ancient frescoes. if you're into spooky vibes, try going on a weekday morning when it's quieter, less chance of other tourists breaking the mood. that pantheon visit sounds solid btw, did you catch the oculus when it was raining?

honestly the catacombs tours pretty much cover the highlights but theres a crypt of st agnes downstairs most people miss, its tiny and easy to walk past. if you ask the guide nicely they might let you linger a bit longer in the quieter parts. the spooky factor is real tho, especially when the lights flicker

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
