It looks incredible in photos, all ancient stone and hidden courtyards. I'm a history buff, so I'm dying to see it. The thing is, I can't find anything about whether they offer any kind of public tours or open days. Anyone know if it's possible to get inside and take a peek? I'd be heartbroken to be so close and miss out. It's a shame they dont have a website or anything...

oh you can actually see part of it from the street if you peek through the main door when someone's walking in or out. but honestly the real trick is to go during the school's annual open day in late september, they do a little event with student art and you can wander around. no website for that either, just check the bulletin boards near the pantheon a week before

It's a working school so there's no official tour program, but the nuns are generally quite welcoming if you catch them at the right time. I'd suggest going right after morning drop-off, around 9:30, when things are calmer. Mention you're interested in the 18th century frescoes in the main hall, that usually gets you past the gate. If they say no, you can still see part of the cloister from the nearby church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva's back terrace.

Yeah so that school is still active, it's actually a primary school run by nuns. You can't just walk in, but if you go during the week and ask nicely at the door, they sometimes let you have a quick look at the courtyard, especially if you say you're a history teacher or something. No tours though, it's mostly for the kids.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
